A Rare Breed

A Rare Breed tells the story of Rob Wilson a Tasmanian Chicken and Pig breeder who also happens to be XXY. Rob was born with two complete sets of male and female gonads and was operated on as a child so they would present more male like in appearance. With the assistance of fertility treatments he went on to ‘father’ children and by all accounts has lived successfully in that role.

Rob said it was because of his differences that he became interested in breeding Bantam Chickens playing around with their genetics until he fine tuned several breeds such as his prized Wyandotte Bantams and went on to become seventh in the world at breeding them. With a successful program behind him and with his children now grown Rob has taken to speaking publicly of his own difference and the trails and tribulations he has experienced over the years. In his own words ‘people deserve to know that life is not black and white like it’s often made out to be, and instead it’s filled with diversity.

Red Wombat Productions tell us the full documentary will be made available in the new year, but for now, it’s winning accolades at major Australian film festivals. While we await its public release, we would like to bring to your attention upcoming screenings at Melbourne Queer Film Fest and Geelong Pride Film Fest, and ask that you give it your tick of approval on the day.
